Christmas down under

In my entire 22 years of existence, I have never not been home for Christmas--until now. For weeks, I had been dreading how I would feel on Christmas morning when I woke up and didn't have my parents and brothers to open presents with followed by my all time favorite tradition, Pig Fest. I spent the entire month of December staying busy so my mind wouldn't be filled with how I'd feel on the 25th.

Kalee arrived in Bowral on the 24th and joined me at Ben's house for Christmas Eve dinner. Well, I suppose we were a bit late so we missed dinner but made it just in time to try pavlova for the first time. It's a traditional Christmas desert. The base is made with egg whites and sugar and just melts when it hits your tongue. It's topped with cream and berries. Oh man, it's the BEST!!! I really should learn how to make it although, that could be pretty dangerous. Needless to say, my no sugar diet has gone to hell in a handbag over this holiday season. I'll get back on track though.

On Christmas morning, Kalee and I woke up to James screaming, "Em! Santa! PRESENTS!" It was the sweetest thing to hear. I had the biggest smile on my face and I knew I would be just fine. We got dressed (yes, it was my first time actually getting dressed on Christmas morning. No pajamas.) and headed downstairs to find that Santa had indeed paid us a visit. James opened the first gift and was thrilled to see he got a new Buzz Lightyear doll. He absolutely loved his old one but unfortunately, Buzz's arms and legs have fallen off and he had become a floating head. The look on his face when he saw his new toy was priceless. Josh opened his gift--a bouncing, talking baby doll that he fell in love with weeks prior at Big W (equivalent to Kmart). After the initial excitement wore off, he bursted into tears. At this point, it was about 8:30am and we had the nerve to not have had a proper breakfast at 8am so he was not happy. Present time had to go on hold so we could feed our little eating machine.

Later that day, Jo and Dave's siblings, parents and other family and friends arrived for a big Christmas lunch. We sat down for a big, delicious meal and spent the rest of the day eating and drinking.

Dave set up the slip 'n slide the boys received for Christmas from their grandma (Michi). He felt it was not long enough so he pulled out tarp from the garage and set up a 30 ft super slip 'n slide in the backyard. It was by far the biggest one I've ever seen (that's what she said). The next thing I know, Dave and Grant were suited up in their speedos and sliding through the backyard together. It was a sight to see!

After a day of stuffing our faces, Kalee and I knew it was necessary to do some P90X. It probably only burned off the calories from a quarter of what we ate but I suppose it's better than nothing.

Kalee and I then spent the rest of the night at her boss' house who happens to live two blocks away from me. We were surrounded by 40 Italians who were eating tons of delicious food, drinking bottles of Moet like it was water and playing some crazy Italian card game that I swear, I'll never be able to learn.

It was an utterly unforgettable Christmas, to say the least.

My sweet, little boys

Just before Thanksgiving, Jo and I took the boys to Bondi Junction to have professional pictures taken. The photographers were so patient and best of all, quick. Joshy was a little ham and definitely could have sat there all day smiling for the camera. Jamesy was not as happy but once we gave him a lollipop, he perked up for a few shots. I know I'm biased but these boys are gorgeous!!!

Josh (1.5 years old)

It's the most wonderful time of the year

To get the boys ready for Christmas, we took them to the mall to have their photo taken with Santa. Knowing James would be a bit skeptical about sitting on a strange man's lap, we told him that he gets to ask Santa for presents and then he would get ice cream afterwards. James happily obliged and told requested a new Buzz doll. Josh, on the other hand, could not be bribed. He was terrified. In his defense, this guy seemed like he absolutely hated Christmas. He didn't even say Merry Christmas or ho, ho, ho! What a crock.

Oprah mania

I can't believe I forgot to mention the Oprah mayhem that has taken place in Australia last week. Miss Winfrey decided to bring her entourage here for an Aussie adventure. The excitement was on par, if not higher, than if the pope were to pop his head in to the land down under. I mean, she's a big deal but for days I couldn't turn on the TV without seeing Oprah on every news station. Oh, and here's the fun fact that I had to hear over and over. Oprah decided to bring 302 Americans on her trip and apparently 200 of them had never been out of the country. I'm pretty sure it's things like this that explains why a drunk guy said to me, "It's nice to see that you guys are getting out" when I told him I was from the States. What is going on America? See the world! It really bums me out that so few Americans travel internationally. I know it's expensive but the rest of the world seems to find a way to do it. They save for it because they recognize how important it is to have experiences where you're immersed in another culture and completely out of your comfort zone. I'll probably spend the rest of my life traveling and still feeling like I haven't seen enough of the world. I'm not trying to sound high and mighty but I suppose I've just been bitten by the travel bug.

I'm glad Oprah had a fun time here though. It was cool to see the things she was doing (i.e. the Bridge Climb and holding koalas) because they were things that I wanted to do/did as soon as I got here.

It's my life...

It feels like all of my weekends here are just filled with fun and excitement so here's a bit of a recap...

After four months of anticipation, it was finally the day of the Bon Jovi concert. I had two hot dates, Jo and Jacqui, who accompanied me to the show on Friday night. We started the evening with a dinner at a local restaurant and then had to sprint over to the stadium because the concert had started and we were nowhere near our seats. We considered the running our way of working off the several plates of unhealthy, (albeit) amazing food we had consumed minutes prior.

I'm fascinated that guys that are so old can still jam out the way a bunch of 20 year olds would. I have no idea where they find the strength or stamina because I was exhausted just watching them. They played all of their classics (Living on a Prayer as the finale) and some stuff from their new album. It was rocking!

Here's me and Jac!

Jo's brother, Grant, works for the Park Hyatt where Bon Jovi stayed. He seemed a little underwhelmed with him though. I should have found out why but I think I was just in shock that not everyone is impressed by every celebrity like I am. I swear I have celebrity fever. Just today, I screamed when I opened a box from home with People and US Weekly magazines. You would have thought I opened a box full of gold.

Saturday was spent shopping for Christmas presents at Bondi Junction with Natalie. I hadn't seen my dear, sweet Nat since Thanksgiving so it was great to have her around to mock my American accent--one of her favorite pass times. I have to admit that she gets it dead on almost every time. Nat seems to think I'm too enthusiastic when I say "thank you" to people in the shops. She feels like a monotone, "thank you" is more than enough whereas I think "Thank you very much! Have a great day!" is much more fitting. Nat is sure to giggle and repeat what I said after each occurrence. The two of us headed over to Marisa's place to distract her from visa paperwork. I'm secretly hoping that if her visa doesn't get approved, she'll be forced to move back to the U.S. sooner. A girl can dream, right?

Later that night, the three of us headed over to The Spot at Randwick for some Thai food and red wine. As soon as Kalee was done with her Christmas party, she met up with us so we could go see Love and Other Drugs. Personally, I liked the movie but I think I was expecting more. I mean, Jake Gyllenhaal is a total hunk and I love seeing him shirtless more times than I can count but I thought the plot was weak. Whatever, this is just a blog, not a place for me to critique movies. We absolutely love our girl time and this was no exception. It was another good weekend for the books.

Happy Thanksgiving

It is an embarrassment that my last blog post is about a trip I took in August. It's almost December, people! So due to popular demand, specifically demand by Erin, I will do my best to keep up with my adventures.

This weekend, I celebrated Thanksgiving down in Bowral. Jo's side of the family has celebrated Turkey Day since they lived in America about 20 years ago. Josh, the bottomless pit, was in heaven.

Generally, it's 8-10 people at dinner but this year, it was a bash of about 30 people. Marisa, BJ, Natalie, Steve, Kalee and Katie were all in attendance. Just to back track, Kalee and Katie are UF girls as well. Kalee and I did a wedding planning internship together in Gainesville about two years ago. Her and Katie, better known as Fabe, moved to Australia about a month ago to spend a year working and traveling. They are just two hot babes from Florida living the dream and having a blast. I met Steve through BJ at the beginning of October when we were at the races. Steve and BJ went to school together and have been friends for years. Natalie and Steve recently started dating a few months ago and make the sweetest couple. Marisa and I instantly fell in love with Nat and have been friends ever since.

(from the left) Katie, Marisa, Kalee, Natalie and me!

Anyway, I was so thrilled to have three American friends celebrate Thanksgiving with me (Marisa, Kalee and Fabe) because I knew they would be the only ones that would appreciate the over sized portions and be able to teach our Aussie friends some good 'ol drinking games. Beer pong would have been our first choice but unfortunately, we didn't have ping pong balls so we opted for Flip Cup. Naturally, the Americans dominated. Let me also say that it's cocky remarks like the one I just made that make the rest of the world hate the U.S. so maybe I should tone it down a bit.

Thanksgiving also coincided with Steve's 35th birthday so we had a joint celebration. We decided to haze him about and make him a sign of 35 things to complete by the end of the night. Some of the tasks included, eating with his left hand, playing footsie at the dinner table with someone other than Natalie (BJ was chosen one), running nude around the outside of the house (BJ also took part in this one) and using the words, "y'all, bless it and oh, my heavens" all in the same sentence, thanks to our gorgeous Southern bell, Kalee. Thanksgiving day festivities started around noon and by 9pm, there were only a few boxes checked off the list so Dave went into action and went through every challenge on the list until they were all completed. Several bottles of alcohol later and lots of photos being taken, Steve could finally be left alone and head out to the bars. What a trooper!

So, here I am left with great memories of another great Thanksgiving. I suppose this is the part where I should say what I'm thankful for. I'm thankful for my parents and my brothers. I'm thankful for the girlfriends, husbands and significant others that make my family even bigger. I'm thankful for grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and my future niece/nephew. I'm thankful for Dave, Jo, James and Josh for having the opportunity to be part of their lives for an entire year. I'm thankful that I get to live in such a beautiful country where I have new experiences everyday and meet people from all over the world. I'm thankful for my friends from home and my friends I've met here. And it wouldn't be Thanksgiving if I didn't say that I am thankful for (you guessed it) Heeleys. Honestly, I feel like I could go on all day. I have a lot to be thankful for this year.

Cairns

After Erin and Mike Thompson left Sydney, Craig and I started our trip to Cairns. Our trip got off to a rough start as we stayed out drinking the entire night before our 7am flight. Needless to say, we were passed out on the airport floor waiting for the plane to board. It wasn't a pretty sight.

Everyday was an action packed with adventure. Our first day was spent at Cape Tribulation/Port Douglas. It poured the whole day so it was hard to be very active. The highlight was holding a koala. It's illegal to hold koalas in New South Wales which is where Sydney is but we were able to do it in Queensland.

Day 2 was spent at Great Barrier Reef to snorkel and scuba dive. Since it was a two hour boat ride to get out to the Reef and we were traveling on rough waters, I quickly lost my breakfast before we even got there. Craig says it's the most puke he's ever seen. He's seen me vomit since the beginning of our relationship though so I don't think he was really phased by it. Unfortunately, I was too sick to enjoy the day and had to sit out after snorkeling. I still loved being out there though.

Our favorite part of the trip was whitewater rafting. We did an extreme version which essentially means we rafted in much more dangerous areas, got thrown into the water and got sent down the "drowning simulator" which is about the time I cried to Craig and didn't let him leave my side. I should also mention that when we were tossed into the water, Craig (accidentally so he says) punched me in the face and then I got stuck under the boat. I had a few choice words to say to him that I will not repeat.
Vinny, our fearless tour guide, quickly became my favorite person. He knew I was scared and promised to take care of me. Once I calmed down, I really enjoyed myself. It was five hours of my adrenaline pumping and such a cool experience.

For some silly reason, we thought it would be fun to spend our last day bungy jumping. We have been sky diving so we thought this would be another one-in-a-lifetime type thing to tick off our bucket list. While we were getting our ankles strapped to the cord, "Another One Bites the Dust" started playing on the loud speaker and I thought I was going to lose it. All I can say is jumping off a platform 150 ft in the air is a seemingly impossible task. Craig and I were a couple of little girls and basically just leaned over until we fell. We could not bring ourselves to actually jump. I can honestly say that I'm glad I did it but I will never do it again.

After five days of near death experiences, we were ready to come back to Sydney. We got back late on a Thursday night and slept like babies.

Melbourne

The days between the bridge climb and leaving for Melbourne early on August 24 are starting to blur together so let's just assume we had a good time.

The four of us apparently thought it was smart to get on a 7am flight until that morning at 5am when we were just wishing we could stay in bed. Once we got our cranky butts up and to the airport, we noticed something that we weren't used to--no need for identification of any kind. We flew through security without ever even showing our boarding passes. It wasn't until we were about to step on the plane that we flashed those bad boys. I don't mean to be arrogant but after 9/11, wouldn't the rest of the world realize the importance of airport security?

Here's us just walking up to the plane...

Since we only had a few days in Melbourne, we tried to fit as much in as possible. Our first stop was the Queen Victoria Market. It was easy to get lost in this place because it was just never-ending rows of cheese, bread, candy, fruit, vegetables, clothes and every souvenir imaginable. It was a good thing we weren't there too long because I could have done some serious damage.

Next, we checked out the Titanic exhibit at the museum. As soon as we walked in, we were given a passport with information on it of an actual passenger. At the end of the tour I found out my person and her child both died so I was a bit bummed.

A friend of ours gave us a list of the hot local spots in Melbourne to check out so we did our best to hit them all. The weather was crappy while we were there so made sure we stayed in one place until the rain stopped long enough for us to walk outside. Basically, we were boozing for most of the trip.

Melbourne and Sydney are the UF and FSU of Australia. There is a constant rival of which city is better and of course, people favor which ever place they live in. I'm going to be unbiased for a second and compare the two.

Melbourne
Pros
-Great shopping
-Easy public transportation
-Unique bars and restaurants
-A huge outdoor market

Cons
-No beaches
-Cold weather
-Small city

Sydney
Pros
-Gorgeous beaches
-Big city
-Very scenic (i.e. Harbour Bridge and Opera House)

Cons
-An average public transportation system
-Too many dirty pubs
-Traffic

Let's just say I'm happy to be on the Sydney side.

Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb

If having my two of my best friends here wasn't enough, I was lucky enough to see my Craig! On August 20, he arrived and I couldn't think of a better way to show him the city he has been dying to go to his whole life than to take him to the top of the one of Sydney's most well-known landmarks, the Harbour Bridge. Getting to the top of the bridge (the highest point of the arch is 440 feet) back took about 2.5 hours. There were tons of ladders and stairs but we managed.

Blue Mountains

Blue Mountains

Erin, Mike Thompson and I had the pleasure of spending the day with Jo's dad, John, in the gorgeous Blue Mountains a couple weeks ago. The Blue Mountains is about 90 minutes away from Sydney and has some of the most breathtaking views. We ended the day by watching the sunset and drinking a bottle of wine with Jo's brother, Grant. We had a blast!

On the train ride back to Sydney, Erin and I entertained ourselves by listening to songs on her iPod, lip syncing and acting out the lyrics and then made Mike Thompson guess what we were listening to. Most of the time, MT would figure it out within the first 15 seconds but let us continue to make fools of ourselves until the song was almost over. I swear we could have fun doing anything.

Erin and Mike Thompson in Sydney!

Last Friday, two of my best friends from high school, Erin and MT, made the 24 hour trip all the way to Sydney. We have been hitting all of the tourist spots like the Harbour to see the bridge and the Opera House, Bondi beach and Taronga Zoo. Tomorrow, they're heading to Hunter Valley for a full day of wine tasting. They're going to be smashed! On Thursday morning, I'll meet up with them so we can all head to the Blue Mountains. I've been here for nearly five months and I still haven't gone so I'm glad I have friends to motivate me to go.

Since the three of us say and do stupid things multiple times a day, we came up with the genius idea of keeping a record of all of these moments. I now carry around a pink notebook labeled, "The Burn Book" in magazine cutouts. The pages are quickly filling up with ridiculous quotes.

It's been fun for me to show my friends what my life is like here. My blog and e-mails can only do so much! On a side note, I plan to make my blog better now that I have my new camera! Woo hoo!

Anyway, I haven't slept in days so I'm going to attempt to get more than five hours of sleep now.

Running break

After three months of marathon training, I'm sad to say that I have to take some time off from running. I tore my meniscus in my right knee about a month ago and have been unable to run more than 5K ever since.

Since I was training and fundraising for Can Too, all money raised ($1,300) will still be donated to Cure Cancer Australia. Once my knee has healed, I will jump right back into my training program to finish what I started.

I'd like to say I'm sincerely grateful to everyone who has contributed to this worthy cause. Big thanks goes out to:

-Janet Giangeruso
-Christina Gambino
-Chris Cruz
-Melissa Blohm

I'm overjoyed to have family and friends in my life that support me so much. Thank you for all the support. I'll be pounding the pavement in just a few months!

M.I.A.

Wow! I can't believe it's been almost a month since I've updated this thing. So much has happened so I'll do my best to give the highlights.

-Last month, on July 7, Josh took his first steps. A month later, he's practically running around the house. He went from a baby to a little boy in a matter of a few weeks. It's so cute watching him be so independent.

-James is saying new words. He learned how to say "Josh" instead of "Dosh" which is adorable but I think I'll still say Dosh.

-Last week, we moved out of our Annandale house and are currently staying in a rental house in Moss Vale. It's a massive six-bedroom house with a tennis court, trampoline, pool table and more room than we know what to do with. The bad part is that cell phones and Internet don't work very well here so we're on a technology detox. I think I've spent a total of 30 minutes on the Internet in the past week which is a drastic decrease for me.

-I have booked my flight to return to the U.S. I'll be flying into San Diego on March 15. It's been almost five months since I've been in Australia and I can't believe how quickly the time has gone by. I'm loving every minute of being here.

-I am all caught up on my American shows including, The Bachelorette, The City, The Hills, Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami and Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List. When I really think about it, I have to admit that I watch the crappiest shows. Of course, that won't stop me from watching them though.

-Now for the bad news. A few weeks ago, I had trouble running a 22K. By the last 5K, I felt like I couldn't even lift my right leg because my knee hurt so much. I saw a sports chiropractor and found out that I tore my meniscus. You can imagine my frustration as I was really pumped up about running the marathon next month. My plan is to rest it and get treatment until it's better and hop right back into training and do the next marathon. I'm so determined to do this.

-I'll end this on a good note, though. Erin and Mike Thompson are coming to visit this Friday and Craig will be here a week later. It's going to be so much fun to have them all here at once. I think it's cool to be able to show my friends from home what my life is like here. Plus, I've given them lists of things to bring me like copies of People and US Weekly, stuff to make s'mores, cereal, shoes and a whole bunch of other things I miss from home. It's going to be an action packed three weeks but I can't wait for it!

I'll try not to make it too long before I update this thing again. I'm off...

Half way there! :)

While everyone was fast asleep on Sunday morning, I was pounding the pavement for my longest run yet -- 14 miles! This was the first long run I completed without my group. It was tough at times to keep going but I listened to a lot of Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus on my iPod so they got me through it (thanks, gals).

I am officially at the half way mark of my 20-week training program for the Sydney Marathon. In two short months, I will line up with thousands of people who are just as insane as me and run for 26.2 miles.

Fun fact: Less than 1% of the world's population has completed a marathon.

The best part is that I've already raised $1,155 for Cure Cancer Australia. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd raise this money so quickly and now I'm dying to make the $2,000 total! If you haven't sponsored me yet and are looking to send a few tax deductible bucks to cancer research and support me in my marathon, I'd be hells bells grateful! Just think, that money is off to the tax man anyway so you may as well send it somewhere useful.

Mom and Dad, I expect you to forward this on to your friends and beg for sponsorship for your only daughter and favorite child. To my brothers, let me threaten you by saying if you don't pass this along, I'll make sure to tell mom and dad all of the terrible things you got away with as a kid and if I can't think of anything they don't already know about, I'll make up something really good. My dear, sweet friends, surely you can all spare a few bucks to help me out.

To donate go to http://www.cantoo.org.au/ and click "sponsor now" on the top, right-hand corner.

I know you're all looking forward to a time when my ceaseless begging comes to an end. Don't worry -- that time is near. Hang in there! To everyone who has already donated, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Catching up

Ok, I realize it's been almost two weeks since I've posted anything. I sure everyone has been checking for updates incessantly and has their panties in a knot at this point. I appreciate the concern. Anyway, everything is great in my neck of the woods. I'll catch you up on the highlights.

The house sold last week which was reason to have several champagne toasting sessions. The best part is that the house doesn't have to be immaculate for viewings anymore which is tough to do with two little ones running around. We move out of the house in a month! We'll be renting a house for another month until the Bowral house is finished.

Erin and Mike Thompson booked flights to come visit me. From Aug 13-27, I'll be gallivanting around with two of my best friends. I seriously can't wait! I plan to get them very drunk and show them what pashing and dashing is all about. I'm thinking they'll welcome it with open arms. We are still working out plans but we're hoping to do a bit of traveling as well.

For the name sake of my blog, I decided to read The Nanny Diaries. I just finished it and thought it was really cute! It's about a nanny living in NYC who is worked to death by rich, snobby parents and she is somehow keeping a secret that the dad is cheating on the mom. It was cute. Unfortunately, because I took reporting at UF (the class that takes over your life), I obsessively pick out grammatical errors when reading books, magazines or any other publications. Let me just say I could have covered the pages with red marks. Thanks, Foley.

The boys are as cute as ever. Josh learned how to play peek-a-boo. He covers his eyes with his hands and after about five seconds, he throws his hands in the air and I yell, "PEEK-A-BOO!" He loves it! He is also standing by himself for about 10-15 seconds at a time. James is very into The Wiggles right now. We watch the same episode almost everyday and dance around the living room.

I think that's all the news I have to share for now. Hope everyone had a great 4th of July!

xoxo

Video frenzy

You'll notice many videos of the boys going up on my blog. Until my camera gets here, I am making use of my video camera and creating a mini reality series of James and Josh. Let me apologize in advance for my annoying voice. Do I really sound like that? Yikes...

Ok, no need to cry...

Yes, I just made an entire post dedicated to Erin (Please don't be jealous, Gia). In all fairness, I was chatting with her and asked, "What should I blog about?" and her response was, "Me!" My point is that she's not the only one I love and miss so don't hold it against me! :)

I know there are a lot of exciting things going on back home so it can be a challenge being on the other side of the world. I feel like I'm always missing out on something but I guess that's just the way it goes. Although, the distance has strengthened many of my relationships. I've learned to appreciate my family and friends more than I ever thought I could which is pretty unbelievable considering I was already so obsessed with them!

So, I'm sending lots of hugs and kisses from the land down under!

Long distance relationship

Skype sessions, phone calls, e-mails, Facebook chat and postcards are all part of the package when your loved ones are overseas. My best friend, Erin, and I are having a tough time being so far away from each other. If we had it our way, we would be living together in a one-bedroom apartment where we'd always have Larry's ice cream in the freezer and watch senior video every night before bed. We'd also prank call Andrea and Tyler quite often just for good measure.

Anyway, I'm going to shout it from the rooftops (I'll wear a sign on my chest) that I miss Erin Erin Gail Lail Kossowsky!!!

Happy Duck

Recently, James became hooked on the movie, Happy Feet, but because he thinks the penguins are ducks, he refers to it as Happy Duck. There's a lot of singing and dancing in the movie so he now does this dance all the time!

Poor Joshy

Sometimes it seems like Josh is so used to getting beat up that he's not even phased by it anymore.

Aww

Every Tuesday morning, I take the boys to play group at a church down the street. Usually, James keeps to himself while Josh makes friends with everyone. The ladies who run the group found a way to make James come out of his shell today when they put on music. He was showing the other kids some of his best moves. Being the gentleman that he is, he saved a dance for me and we spun around until we were about to fall over from being so dizzy.

Joshy is known to steal food and drinks from the other kids but that isn't very surprising. Luckily, he was just going after Jamesy's snack today. When he wasn't being a little garbage guts, he was playing with baby dolls, looking at books and trying to crawl on a very narrow windowsill.

Let it be known that I absolutely cherish these experiences with the boys. I love watching James in the pretend kitchen cooking me eggs (which were delicious by the way) and chase after Josh while he's crawling across the room with someone's banana. I feel like I'm constantly taking mental pictures (like Jim and Pam when they got married) so I don't forget all of the precious things the boys do. For instance, Joshy had trouble sleeping tonight so I went upstairs to check on him. The poor thing is teething and has a terrible rash on his bottom so he hasn't been a happy camper. I held him in my arms until he went back to sleep and the best part is that he fell asleep with his hand pressed up again my cheek. I know I sound nuts. I'm over the moon over Josh touching my face. But seriously, it was so sweet and I'll never forget it.

Later, I came downstairs to find James sitting in his pajamas looking through pictures, as he loves to do, and when he got to a picture that we all thought was cute, James turned to me with the biggest smile on his face and said, "awww!" Not only was I thrilled that he learned a new word (and sounded so cute saying it) but he learned one of my words!

I will be buying a new camera very soon so I can post pictures/videos of the boys because I'm sure my words are not doing their cute, day-to-day experiences must justice.

Marisa's co-worker had an emergency and couldn't use the Russell Brand tickets he won on the radio so he gave them to her at the last minute.

Before the show, we had dinner at McDonald's followed by pop tarts and a squeeze pop, both of which we found at some shop in Chinatown. We probably looked like we were high with all of the excitement we had when we discovered these delicious treats right in front of us. The night was definitely off to a good start.

We grabbed a couple drinks, headed to our seats and basically just entertained ourselves for an hour until the show started.

Since we found out about the show only a day in advance, we had no idea what it was about or what to expect. Russell Brand mimicked having sex with a chair on stage (for an uncomfortable amount of time), made fun of Americans, kissed random girls from the audience and tried to orchestrate a giant orgy. Naturally, I loved every second of it.

So, thank you Tommy from Ebay for winning tickets on the radio and being such a fabulous co-worker to Marisa.

For sale!

As I mentioned before,Dave and Jo bought a new house which means the house we live in is for sale.

If you're curious what the house looks like, here's the listing:

http://www.mcgrath.com.au/102786/?searchID=0

If you look at the picture of the front of the house, the two windows are from my room! The bedroom shown is Dave and Jo's room but my room is pretty similar.

And one last thing...look at the round ottoman in the living room, that's where James and I dance everyday. That kid is going to thank me when he's older for teaching him such awesome moves.

My babies

At some point of the day, I get alone time with James and Josh. While Josh takes his morning nap, James and I about an hour and together and when James goes down for his nap in the afternoon, Joshy and I have about a half hour together. I really appreciate the individual time I get with the boys.

When I'm with James, we play with Play Doh, dance around the living room, read books or practice counting to 10. He says, "1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10!" I usually fill in the numbers in between for good measure. After all of our running around, we sit down on the step in the living room and have morning tea (American translation: snack time). James likes to feed me because I pretend like I'm going to eat his fingers. He gets a kick out of it.

When Joshy and I are together, I try to spend as much time as possible cuddling and kissing him because he'll never stop me. He just smiles and starts making cute faces and baby noises. When I finally pry myself away from him, we practicing walking. I hold his hands and we walk up and down the hallway. He laughs the entire time. Although, I'm not sure if he's getting any closer to walking. He doesn't seem to have an interest in doing it on his own. That's ok though because he's more than welcome to hang off my hip.

That's my update for the day. I'm so in love with these boys. I love my job! :)

Training update

Clearly, I'm one for change these days so here's another one. My Friday nights have shifted from going out in the city, eating potato wedges and drinking to having a bowl of pasta and getting in bed early. Giving up my Friday night date with Marisa was no easy task. The reason for my grandma-like behavior is that I wake up every Saturday morning at 6am for a long run with my group. Now that I've completed my fifth week of training, you would think I've grown accustomed to this new schedule but you'd be wrong.

Every Saturday morning, my very loud alarm goes off and the flood of excuses begin to pour into my head of why I should shut off my alarm and go back to bed. Here are just a few...

-It's still dark outside
-It's raining
-It's too cold to be wearing shorts
-I forgot to wash my favorite running shirt
-I should be well rested if I want to run a marathon
-I'm sore from the gym
-I'll run on my own later
-I don't want to drive to the park
-I have a stuffy nose
-My throat hurts
-My finger hurts

Yep, without fail every single week I have this ongoing argument with myself to run or not to run. Curious how the argument ends? I pick my head off the pillow, turn the light on my nightstand on and tell myself to stop being a little baby because no reason is good enough to make me not want to give this training my all.

Of course, by 10am on Saturday morning after my run is completed and I've had a long, hot shower I'm thinking to myself, "Hey, you're awesome. You just ran ___ miles. Keep it up, hot shot." Don't worry, my ego doesn't stay that inflated for too long.

This weekend, I ran nine miles on a very challenging course that included many steep hills and about 12 flights of stairs. I wish I could report my time but my watch stopped working after 50 minutes. It's my own fault for playing with it during my run. Oh well. It was the first non-raining Saturday morning in a while though so I was in a great mood the entire time.

Since my last post of thanking those who have donated, let me add a few more to the list...

-Kim and Lisa Satterfield
-Jim Stewart
-Eddy Dere
-Chris Mercer

Thank you all so much for your generosity. I really appreciate it! :)

As far as fundraising goes, I have raised about $900 which is the the second highest in my group thus far. Clearly, I can't let some boy beat me so I'm asking you to please donate if you haven't. Go to http://www.cantoo.org.au/ and click "sponsor now" on the top, right-hand corner.

Mikey!

I Skyped with Mikey today! :) I hate to admit it but it's the first time we've video chatted since I've been here. I'm such a bad sister. It was so good to see him and Sandy though. I can always count on my brother to make me laugh with an inappropriate "that's what she said" joke or some sort of sleazy innuendo. That's what brothers are for, right?

The pitfall of Skyping with my family is how much I miss them after I'm done talking to them. I just want to jump through the screen and give them a big hug! I suppose that's to be expected though since they're all so ridiculously good looking :)

Bowra-do!

I can't believe I forgot to mention Dave and Jo just bought a new house! It's unfinished so Dave will spend the next four months renovating and making it look incredible. It's located outside of Sydney in a little town called Bowral. There's three sections of Bowral: Bowra-do, Bowra-don't an Bowra-never! Luckily, Dave and Jo are Borwa-doers.

I saw the house while Leiana was visiting and we both agreed that they picked a winner (I'll take pictures next time I see it). I wish I could remember how many bedrooms/bathrooms there are but my memory has failed me yet again. It's massive though and if Dave wins this argument, there will be a pool in the backyard. Exciting stuff!

The house we live in now is on the market and as of next week, potential buyers can view it. Unlike the States, real estate sells quickly here so we won't have to worry about having the house immaculate 24/7 for too long.

Anyway, that's my report for the day.

Growing boys

The best part about living with two little boys is watching them grow before my very eyes. Seriously, everyday they are learning someone new and I'm constantly amazed by it.

Today, James said his first sentence. We were reading his Toy Story book and we got to the end where the toys are at their airport and heading back to Andy's house. James pointed to the picture and said, "Buzz go home. Woody go home." I got so excited so he continued with "Dosh go home!" Joshy didn't understand what was going on but laughed because I was laughing.

James also learned the chicken dance. I actually don't know where he picked it up but lucky for him, I love the chicken dance so we've been doing it all day.

In interest of learning new things, I decided to show him the Gator chomp at dinner. He watched me closely and then made his attempt. Unfortunately, he couldn't get his arms to move up and down as he is used to normal clapping. Being the clever boy he is, he clapped his hands like he's used to doing and tilted his head to the side so it looked like what I was doing. Oh well...we still have a few months until football season, right?

James also taught me how to use an iPhone the other day. I'm not kidding. This 2-year-old boy can navigate through an iPhone better than I can. He knows exactly where to go to see pictures, watch videos, play games, etc. Crazy, huh?

Josh learned how to say "bye." He opens and closes his sweet little hands and says, "buh bye!" At first, he was waving at himself but he learned to face his hand outwards.

Josh is getting closer and closer to taking his first steps. I mean, he pulls himself up and can walk if he's holding onto a piece of furniture or someone's hands but I'm talking about walking all by himself. If I'm being honest, I'll admit that I'm a little sad for him to start walking. I love carrying him everywhere. That boy is permanently attached to my hip like some sort of growth so I'm thinking I may have some separation anxiety once he starts walking.

Gosh, these boys are so freaking cute!

Leianab and Emmy do Sydney

I have spent the last two weeks with my first visitor from home...the lovely Leiana Briganti, better known as Leianab. It's hard to believe that I was actually able to be a tour guide to someone since it wasn't too long ago that I was obsessively asking the bus driver if we were at Central (a gigantic, well-known bus/train stop) yet. I'll do my best to recap our time together.

May 12- Leianab arrives at 7am. I don't find her in the airport until 8:30am because her cell phone didn't work in Australia. First stop in Sydney? The zoo! We packed up James and Josh, hopped on the ferry and spent the rest of the day at looking at animals while James made monkey sounds at all of them. Once we got home, Leianab passed out and I went off to my running group. Do we know how to party or what?

Note: the rest of events will definitely be out of order because I have a terrible memory.

Here are the touristy spots we hit:
-Sydney Zoo
-Featherdale Wildlife Park (petting zoo)
-Powerhouse Museum (exhibitions based on the ideas and technologies that have changed the world aka awesome 80s stuff and dresses from fashion shows)
-Opera House (the most gorgeous building in Sydney)
-Pylon Lookout(best views of the city)
-Coastal walk (Coogee to Bondi beach)
-Hunter Valley Wine Tour (Five wine tastings in one day)
-Treetop Adventures (We thought it was just zip lining but turns out, we were doing crazy obstacles from tree to tree)

When we weren't being tourists, we were either watching Katt Williams/Dave Chappelle/Friends/The Office, playing with James and Josh, walking up the street to get breakfast from Bar Sirocco (where we each ordered the same thing every time), going to bars including Scubar, Martin Place Bar, Ivy and some other bar in Kings Cross where they serve shots from teapots.

I also had the pleasure of introducing Leianab to potato wedges with sour cream and sweet chili sauce, Golden Gaytimes, Tim Tams, cider and Max Brenner.

For those of you who know Leianab, you know she is quite obsessed with taking pictures. Ironically, she left her camera charger at home and her camera died minutes after arriving here. My camera is still being held hostage at the camera repair store so thank you to Dave and Jo for forking over their camera so we could stop whining about not being able to take pictures.

She left early this morning and is currently in transit back to South Florida. I guess I'll have to get used to sleeping alone again!

Becoming an Aussie...

I can't believe I've already lived here for two months. In the short time I've been here, here's what I've learned...

1) Walkers and runners do not say "hello" or "good morning" when passing each other.

2) I can drive on the opposite side of the road. (Note: I now say "opposite side of the side" rather than "wrong side of the road")

3) Men ask you to call them. I will not give into such behavior. I'm so chivalrous.

4) People from New Zealand openly call themselves, "kiwis"

5) No one else here owns Vera Bradley or even knows what it is.

6) There aren't garbage disposals anywhere.

7) Skype is a lifesaver.

8) I'm living Meagan's life so much that I realized I've been using her old bar of soap since I got here.

9) Koalas are not bears. Leave it up to Americans to call them koala bears.

10) "How are you going?" means "How are you?" or "What's up?"
This morning, "how are you going?" just rolled off my tongue and that's when I knew I have settled in to Australia! :)

Scubar!

You all should be enlightened on my first Scubar experience. Basically, it's a bar where backpackers go to meet people. Meagan had enough balls to go on her own but I'm a wimp so I made Dave and Jacqui come with me.

Glancing around the room, we could see everyone eying each other to figure out who they were going to talk to once they got a few drinks in them. Unfortunately, we didn't spot good eye candy right away. We stopped staring long enough to get a little tipsy and bet on some hermit crabs for the race. Yep, there was a hermit crab race. All of the crabs start in the middle of the circular stage and the first crab to get to the outside of the circle, wins. Dave's crab, James, came in second place which won him a lovely Scubar hat. He handed it over to me but with all of the excitement later on in the night, the hat didn't make it home! :(

I went up to the bar to get us some shots (soco and lime) and I noticed someone wearing a t-shirt that said, "San Diego" so naturally, I approached him. He was from New York and when I told him I was from South Florida he asked what part. I said, "Coral Springs" and he knew where it was! At first I thought he was lying to me because I was so excited to talk about Coral Springs but then he said, "That's the place that has really good ice cream, right? Larry's or something?" After that, I knew I was in for a great night.

The place was packed (or "heaving" as the Aussies would say)after about two hours so I ended up losing Dave and Jacqui. Luckily, I found a 20-year old (whose name I can't remember to save my life) to keep me company. Yep, I'm a cougar. Anyway, when I finally had enough, I hopped in a cab and went home. Turns out, Dave, Jacqui and I each took cabs home about 10 minutes apart.

I've really never been to a bar like this but let's just say I will be going back every Monday.

Oh, Scubar...

Many thanks!

I recently joined Can Too to train for my first marathon. As you know, I am also fundraising $2,000 for Cure Cancer Australia. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has donated:

-Christina Gambino
-Nana
-Craig Dobson
-Meagan Mather
-Lindsey Franco
-Artie Pliaconis
-Kelly Conley
-Chris Lowe
-Warren Wong
-Karen and Alex Newton
-Chris Cruz
-Melissa Blohm

I can't tell you all how much I appreciate the support. My training began this week and I'm off to a great start. Every Wednesday night and Saturday morning, I run with a group of about 30 people but soon, we'll break up into smaller groups once we complete a time trial next week. We aren't allowed to run with iPods (iBots) because the coaches want us to socialize and find running buddies. I was really scared about this at first but I quickly embraced it once I got going. It's going to be a tough five months but I'm up for the challenge.

If you haven't donated and would like to, go to http://www.cantoo.org.au/ and click "sponsor now" on the top, right-hand corner. Type in Peterson in the first box and then just put in your info! :)

Thanks again to everyone who has contributed to Cure Cancer. I really have the best family and friends in the world.

Blueys

“Look, Em, he’s bending over.” –Dave I decided to start with the ending to this story.

I went to Bluey’s beach with the family. Once I got there, I realized it was called Bluey’s because the water is a deep blue color. Who would have thought? The town has a population of about 500 and since it was not high season, the beach was completely empty. We were seriously the only ones on the beach. Highlights: I saw my first kangaroos! They were about 3 ft tall. Naturally, I wanted to go pet them but I heard they’ll kick you so I kept a safe distance. Also, I saw about four dolphins swimming up to shore at the beach! Usually, I don’t get excited about seeing animals because I’m pretty much afraid of all of them but I was elated about my kangaroo and dolphin sightings.

Jamesy and Joshy had a blast but I think it’s because they got to eat junk food whenever they wanted. Joshy probably loved this more, though. Our sharing of food has gone to a whole new level. Since he cannot bite into an apple yet, I was sitting on the beach biting off pieces of an apple, taking it out of my mouth and feeding it to him. I felt like I was feeding my baby bird worms.

I wish I could show pictures of my fabulous time but apparently, sand and cameras do not mix. I tried to blow the sand off but it was too late. The damage was done.

Anyway, we decided to take this hilly trail to Shelly beach before leaving. We got laid our stuff out, sat down and noticed we were not the only ones on the beach this time. Dave turned to me and said, “Look, Em, he’s bending over.” We were at a nude beach.

Fist pumping hits Australia

Jersey Shore has made its debut in Sydney and I couldn't be more excited. The reaction Aussies will have towards a nonsense show about Italian-American guidos/guidettes will be priceless. Dave's sister, Leoni, already knows how to fist pump. If I thought Sydney was awesome before, it just got a million times better. I get to watch the entire season all over again! GTL, baby!

People helping people

Yet again, I'm adding a new adventure to my life. No, I'm not moving to another country. This time I'm staying put...well, not exactly. I signed up for my first marathon! You might be wondering why I've decided to attempt such a seemingly impossible task. Here's why:

1. Because it does seem impossible. Anyone who has ever run even a mile can understand the mental and physical demand of 26.2 miles.

2. To help raise money for Cure Cancer Australia - because it seems like everybody these days has been affected in some way by cancer. I joined a non-profit organization called Can Too that will train me for 20 weeks for the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival Marathon on September 19. In return, I have agreed to raise $2,000. Not only am I working towards completing a marathon but I am curing cancer at the
same time because that's what Gators do!

3. If my parents can do it, I "Can Too!" Alright, that was lame. Anyway, my dad is 51 years old and has completed 65 marathons with a personal best time of 2 hours and 26 minutes. Pretty impressive, huh? As a kid, I always thought it was normal to have a dad that was so passionate about running. It didn't matter if it was pouring outside, my dad would get up at the crack of dawn every single day and run for miles and miles. I didn't appreciate or understand the dedication it took until I started running myself. My point is that I look up to a man who has done the impossible 65 times and is still going which gives me all of the encouragement in the world that I can do at least one. My dad's love of running has motivated my oldest brother to run a marathon and my mom to complete seven marathons and several half marathons. He has worked his magic again. There's nothing like the support of your family when they can actually understand all of the blood, sweat and tears you put into something.

Unlike most of my adventures, I need more than just moral support. Yep, this is the part where I'm asking you for money because I know everyone reading this can spare something. Think of it as one less drink at the bar (and some of you really should consider drinking less anyway) or going without Starbucks for a few days. I mean it. Every little bit helps. By donating, you're helping me accomplish a personal goal and helping a deserving cause. It's a win-win for everyone! And if you believe in good karma, here's your opportunity to have something good happen in your life. Maybe you'll get that promotion at work or run into your favorite celebrity. So, now that I've plead my case and called you out on your alcoholism, whip out your credit cards
and donate! Ready, set, go!

To donate go to http://www.cantoo.org.au/ and click "sponsor now" on the top, right-hand corner. Type in my last name, enter the amount you wish to give and, voilà, you've just done a good deed!

Phone credit

Goodbye, AT&T. Hello, inconvenient, annoying Optus. I'm adding something new to the list of things that are different in Australia...having to refill your cell phone credit.

Here's a question, why doesn't everyone use contracts so you always have minutes? Getting a "refill your minutes" text is like getting your period and not having a tampon--you're not prepared for it!

Clearly, I was subjected to this madness today and immediately went into panic mode because I had to go 15 minutes without my cell phone. I'm such an American. Anyway, that's my venting for the day.

My daggy birthday

April 14 has come and gone yet again. This year, I celebrated 14 hours ahead of schedule. Lucky me! I spent the day with Jo, James and Josh at the beach. We sat down to have fish and chips and right as I was about to put my first chip (ok, they're fries) into my mouth, a bird swooped down and stole it from me! I was a little scared to eat more but I figured I'd be safe if I leaned over my food so the birds couldn't see it. Of course I had to feed my little puppy, Josh, since he has learned that if he fusses a bit, I'll give him my entire meal. He really doesn't even have to fuss, he looks at me and can get whatever he wants. Anyway, as I was cutting the fish, the same bird came back and took the entire piece and smacked me in the face while he was at it. I was traumatized and we left immediately.

Jo and Dave took me out to dinner at Dave's favorite Greek restaurant, Diethnes. The food was delicious although, the restaurant itself was, as Dave put it so lovingly, daggy. Naturally, I didn't know what this word meant so Dave took the liberty of explaining it to me by using an example.

"When your mom wears clothes that are 30 years old, that's daggy." -DJB

Anyway, I suppose it was a daggy restaurant but they can be daggy all they want with food like that! Dave and I both got the lamb and potatoes and I loved every bite of it.

After dinner, we went to a lounge that has the best view of the city. It was the perfect ending to a perfect birthday. At least, it was the perfect ending to my Aussie birthday.

Usually, the day after a birthday is a little sad because you realize you have to wait another 365 for the next one. However, being on the other side of the world cured that problem for me. The next day was filled with lots of birthday wishes from my family since it was the 14th at home. I woke up at 5:23am to talk to my dad (3:23pm EST aka my birth time) as part of our annual tradition. My mom had talked to me at 3:23pm Sydney time (1:23am EST). My birthday would not have been complete without those phone calls or listening to Isn't She Lovely?, of course.

After two days of celebration, I'm officially 22. It's the best feeling to be so far away from home but still feel the love. So, thank you to my family and friends for the very sweet birthday wishes!

Bubbly

Obviously, not all of my posts have directly relate to me being a nanny but rather just my experience in Sydney. I wanted to make it clear that this is one has nothing to do with nanny life. I don't condone drinking on the job ;)

Before life in Aussie, I only sipped champagne on New Year's Eve or for some sort of celebratory occasion. Here, bottles pop open anytime, any place. No special reason. No toast. Just because.

This can be very exciting to a newbie like me but also very dangerous. Since I am only used to drinking small amounts of champagne, I never realized how hard it can hit you. After a few glasses, I was already giggly and letting wildly inappropriate things fly out of my mouth. To top it off, I woke up with quite a headache the next morning.

So yeah, whether to celebrate or for no good reason at all, beware of the bubbles. Beware of a culture where drinking bubbles anytime is acceptable. Or, you can pop the top and welcome this phenomenon with open arms.

Footy

Last weekend, I decided to watch some Friday night football with Dave. Of course, it is completely different than American football. And no, it wasn't actually soccer. First of all, they do not wear any pads or protective gear of any sort. The game also doesn't stop at all when someone gets injured. They basically play around the medical staff. It's barbaric.

"Wikipedia is the best thing ever. Anyone in the world can write anything they want about any subject. So, you know you are getting the best possible information." -Michael Scott

With that said, I will allow Wikipedia to better explain the rules...

No more than 18 players of each team are permitted to be on the field at any time.
Up to four interchange (reserve) players may be swapped for those on the field at any time during the game. In Australian rules terminology, these players wait for substitution "on the bench." In Round 8, 2008 a new rule was introduced for the remainder of the season. The AFL club has to lodge a piece of paper with an attendant AFL official detailing the player to come off the ground and his replacement.

There is no offside rule nor are there set positions in the rules; unlike many other forms of football, players from both teams disperse across the whole field before the start of play. However, only four players from each team are allowed within the 50 m centre square before every centre bounce, which occurs at the commencement of each quarter, and to restart the game after a goal is scored. There are also other rules pertaining to allowed player positions during set plays (i.e., after a mark or free kick) and during kick-ins following the scoring of a behind.

A game consists of four quarters and a timekeeper officiates their duration. In professional Australian Football, quarters are 20 minutes plus time on. Time on refers to clock being stopped when the ball is out of play, meaning that an average quarter could last for 27 to 31 minutes.

Games are officiated by umpires. Australian football begins after the first siren, the umpire bounces the ball on the ground (or throws it into the air if the condition of the ground is poor), and the two ruckmen (typically the tallest players from each team), battle for the ball in the air on its way back down.

The ball can be propelled in any direction by way of a foot, clenched fist (called a handball or handpass) or open-hand tap but it cannot be thrown under any circumstances. Throwing is defined in the rules quite broadly but is essentially any open hand disposal that causes the ball to move upward in the air.

A player may run with the ball but it must be bounced or touched on the ground at least once every 15 metres. Opposition players may bump or tackle the player to obtain the ball and, when tackled, the player must dispose of the ball cleanly or risk being penalised for holding the ball. The ball carrier may only be tackled between the shoulders and knees. If the opposition player forcefully contacts a player in the back whilst performing a tackle, the opposition player will be penalised for a push in the back. If the opposition tackles the player with possession below the knees, it is ruled as a low tackle or a trip, and the team with possession of the football gets a free kick.

If a player takes possession of the ball that has travelled more than 15 metres from another player's kick, by way of a catch, it is claimed as a mark and that player may then have a free kick (meaning that the game stops while he prepares to kick from the point at which he marked). Alternatively, he may choose to "play on:" forfeiting the set shot in the hope of pressing an advantage for his team (rather than allowing the opposition to reposition while he prepares for the free kick). Once a player has chosen to play on, normal play resumes and the player who took the mark is again able to be tackled.

There are different styles of kicking depending on how the ball is held in the hand. The most common style of kicking seen in today's game, principally because of its superior accuracy, is the drop punt (the ball is dropped from the hands down, almost to the ground, to be kicked so that the ball rotates in a reverse end over end motion as it travels through the air). Other commonly used kicks are the torpedo punt (also known as the spiral, barrel, or screw punt; the ball is held at an angle and kicked, which makes the ball spiral in the air, like a rugby throw, resulting in extra distance) and the checkside punt or "banana", kicked across the ball on the outside of the foot is used to curve the ball (towards the right if kicked off the right foot) towards targets that are on an angle. There is also the "snap," which is almost the same as a checkside punt, except that it is kicked off the inside of the foot and curves in the opposite direction. It is also possible to kick the ball so that it bounces along the ground. This is known as a "grubber". Grubbers can bounce in a straight line, or curve to the left or right.

Apart from free kicks or when the ball is in the possession of an umpire for a ball up or throw in, the ball is always in dispute and any player from either side can take possession of the ball.

The two tall central posts are the goal posts, and the two shorter outer posts are the behind posts.

A goal is scored when the football is propelled through the goal posts at any height (including above the height of the posts) by way of a kick from the attacking team. It may fly through on the full or bounce through, but must not have been touched, on the way, by any player from either team.

A behind is scored when the ball passes between a goal post and a behind post at any height, or if the ball hits a goal post, or if an attacking player sends the ball between the goal posts by touching it with any part of the body other than a foot. A behind is also awarded to the attacking team if the ball touches any part of an opposition player, including his foot, before passing between the goal posts. When an opposition player deliberately scores a behind for the attacking team (generally as a last resort, because of the risk of their scoring a goal) this is termed a rushed behind. Before the start of the 2009 season, this would be the same score as a regular behind. However, because in the 2008 grand final, the Hawthorn Football Club rushed 11+ behinds a new rule was introduced stating that the behind will be counted and the player that rushed the behind will also concede a free kick in the goal square.

A goal is worth 6 points whereas a behind is worth 1 point. If the scores are level on points at the end of play, then the game is a draw; extra time applies only during finals matches in some competitions.

Josh is ONE! :)

Yesterday, we celebrated Joshy's first birthday. He had no idea what that meant but loved all of the hugs and kisses, and of course, the cake. When I woke up yesterday morning, I had package waiting for me with lots of yummy treats (thanks, mom!) including funfetti cake mix. I took it upon myself to make him mini cupcakes because they're so delicious and I also couldn't wait a week for my birthday. I'm pathetic.

Joshy had his own cupcake and then when I went to take a picture with him, he told my cupcake out of my hand and put the entire thing in his mouth. It was too cute! I feel like such a little mommy these days. I basically share all of my food with him since he always wants whatever I have. It started with me sharing grapes with him. And by that I mean I would eat half of a grape and give him the other half since a whole one is too big for him. Now, we share all meals and snacks. It's adorable.

"I run the way I did when I was a kid because it's the only way it's fun." -Pheebs

Since I've been here, I vowed to run at least five times a week. So far, it's been working out pretty well for me. I love that my regular run is along the water, past the sailboats and yachts, to the boathouse and back home. However, it stops being fun when everyone and their mother brings their dog out for the same run and doesn't put them on a leash. It's great that people want their dogs to get exercise. Trust me, I wish Belle would run with me. But seriously, if I trip over one more dog, I'm going to flip out.

Circular Quay

I'm a little behind so let me jump back to Wednesday night. Marisa and I decided to meet up for dinner. I hopped on the bus of course, missed my stop. Oh well, Circular Quay was just as good. Marisa needed to get on a bus to find me so I was waiting for her near a McDonald's. Yep, there's McDonald's here. Although, they are overpriced and the ketchup is way too sweet. Not that I've had a happy meal or anything to know this information :) Anyway, as I was waiting, an old man passed by and said, "Don't worry, love, he'll be here soon." My response? "I won't hold my breath."

We went to the Opera bar which is the best place to be to sit and enjoy Sydney at night. It's the perfect view of the Opera House, Anzac Bridge and the city. While enjoying the view and celebrating Marisa getting a job (yay!) we split potato wedges with sour cream and sweet chili sauce. Yet again, another Aussie thing I have discovered and loved!

Meet the boys

I have done my "Nanny Diaries" blog a disservice by not saying much about James and Josh. So here it is, kiddos...

James
James is your classic 2-year-old boy. One minute he's crying and the next minute, he's running around and laughing. He is absolutely obsessed with Toy Story and carries his Woody doll everywhere he goes. Poor Buzz is constantly falling apart. He tried to make him fly too many times, I guess. James knows a handful of words including, Mama, Dadda, Dosh (Josh), eesh (fish), oh no, Buzz, Woody, nana (pacifier) and more (usually when he wants more food). He is the only toddler I know that can use an iPhone. Jo has games on her phone for him and he knows exactly where to go to get to the games and how to play them. It's incredible. He's such a baby genius! Also, he thinks when he pokes me it's the same as tickling me so he cracks himself up every time he does it. I can always count on James to say or do something silly to make me laugh.

Josh
My little, cuddly baby, Josh, is about to turn 1 on April 7. He is happiest when he's being held. I think he's starting to play me a little bit though. The second he starts fussing, I run over and pick him up. He's too cute to be upset! I'm such a sucker. Joshy is always the first one to finish his food and want more. Often, I catch him eating leaves, dirt or cat food. He's such a mischievous little boy. He can pull himself up and is so close to learning how to walk! I can't wait to see him take his first steps.

James and Josh play so nicely together. They crawl around the house together, share their toys and James even tries to tickle Josh and blow on his belly. I absolutely love and adore the two of them.

The other side of the road

Everything in Australia is basically the complete opposite of back home. It's summer right now for starters but hey, I'm not complaining. Also, they use the metric system which has made me have to think way too much. Why hasn't the U.S. been using it like the rest of the world!? Oh well. Anyway, the most noticeable difference is that cars here are driven on the left side of the road. I can't tell you how many times I've almost gotten run over because I look the wrong way before crossing the street. After going to visit Jo's brother Grant, I got behind the wheel and drove us home. I gripped the steering wheel as hard as I could, drove below the speed limit and didn't allow myself to blink. It was like I was 15 years old again driving around Coral Springs with my permit. Since I'm writing this post, I guess it's obvious I made it home in one piece. Yay!

One week down...

It was Jacqui's (Dave's sister) birthday last night so I went to her birthday party and met the rest of the Baranowski family. They were all so sweet and welcoming! Jacqui's roommate, Jay, had a Mission Beach sweatshirt laying on her bed and I was thrilled to death! Jay is the one who peer pressured me to go to the club after the party. I wanted to be a grandma and go to bed but she told me I was 21 and needed to live it up. I need someone to tell me to stop being a baby every once in a while!

I quickly learned if look like you've had a few too many drinks, you can't get into a bar or club. Also, if you get drunk in the bar or club, they will stop serving you drinks and probably kick you out. I had to talk to three bouncers last night just to get into a club. I guess pre-gaming isn't a big thing here.

In the interest of trying new things, I took a shot of Sambuca. I felt like Katt Williams. It was disgusting and I will never go near that stuff again. It is liquid black liquorice. Yuck!

Anyway, I spent today in bed watching season five of Reba. I should have gone to the beach or at least done something productive but, oh well. I love lazy Sundays.

Coogee

Thought for the day--Coogee beach puts all California beaches to shame. When I suggested the beach, Marisa suggested Coogee, probably because I would get lost going anywhere else. Nonetheless, it was a great choice.

Before stepping onto the beach, I decided to grab my usual smoothie; strawberry-banana, extra banana. Apparently, Australians make smoothies with milk and no ice. I had to convince the guy to put juice in my smoothie instead of milk. He thought I was nuts. I told him I was American. He obliged.

Anyway, we came across a guy who told us he was going shark fishing tomorrow night. We asked how big the shark was and he decided to draw us a diagram in the sand complete with the eyes and fins. I guess Americans aren't the only crazy ones here.

Out on the town

Now that I've taken over Meagan's life, I have her old cell phone. She graciously left important phone numbers for my use. I'll probably be calling her parents any day now. Anyway, I called up her friend, Marisa, and we decided to meet up for some drinks in Surry Hills with her boyfriend and flat mate. Marisa is originally from Pennsylvania so she can totally relate to all of the culture shock I'm experiencing.

Here are the things I've learned about going out in Sydney...
1. You don't tip at bars, restaurants, cabs, etc.
2. People here can drink like champs.
3. When a guy asks for your number, he actually calls. I haven't tested this theory but I hear the rumors are true. Crazy, right?
4. Cider is the girly drink. It's delicious.
5. There are way too many buses and they all take way too long. If you fall asleep on the bus, you'll miss your stop and get lost.

Oh, the places I will go...

I've quickly come to realize there are thousands of things to do with my time. Because I'm such a lover of lists, I knew I had to put this in print. Now, I hope it goes without saying but I plan to see/do/experience everything Sydney has to offer. This list is for the places outside of Sydney I would like to explore.

So here it is (in no particular order)...

-New Zealand
-Melbourne
-Brisbane
-Whitsundays
-Blue Mountains
-Crescent Head Beach
-Cairns
-Perth
-Ayers Rock

Meagan Mather deserves every ounce of credit for this list. For those of you who don't know about Meagan, let me get you up to speed. Meagan was my college roommate (we're so Ross and Chandler) who lived here, yes, in this very house, for the past seven months. Upon my arrival, I found a guide of places to go and things to do. Even better, I found a Friends quote in every drawer I opened. So thank you, Meagan, for my bucket list and allowing me to pull another "1431" and take over your room and basically, your life.
